What happens during a Hanbury HealthSpan assessment in Milton Keynes?

A Hanbury HealthSpan assessment brings together blood biomarkers, body composition, physical function and cognition, with consultant-led interpretation and a written plan. It is designed to help you understand your starting point and choose practical steps that support living well as you get older.
You might arrive wanting to understand a family history, regain confidence in your fitness or stay strong enough for the activities you enjoy. Those personal goals give the measurements their purpose.
The published programme begins in November 2026. The morning and ongoing support vary between Foundation, Performance and Elite.1
The short version
- Begin with your goals and any health concerns, so the team can help you choose the right route.
- The assessment brings four areas of health and capability into one picture.
- Fasting insulin and glucose are combined to calculate HOMA-IR.
- Performance and Elite add a submaximal VO₂ max estimate and the full strength and movement suite.
- Your report connects the findings with practical priorities, with support depending on your package.
How do you begin?
Start with Contact us. You can explain what prompted your interest, what feels different and what you would like help understanding.
There is no need to arrive with a list of tests. "I want to stay active with my family" or "I feel generally well but want a clearer plan" gives the team a useful starting point.
Mention existing conditions, medicines, recent results and any symptoms. If a particular concern needs a different assessment first, the enquiry can help identify that before you book.
You can also discuss how much support you would like afterwards. The packages differ partly in the depth of assessment and partly in the help available to put the plan into action.

How should you prepare for the assessment?
The morning includes fasting blood sampling and a fasted resting-metabolic-rate measurement. Follow the individual instructions supplied by the team, including the fasting period and advice about medicines.1
If fasting is complicated by a health condition or treatment, raise this in advance. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
Ask about suitable clothing and footwear for the movement assessments. Bring relevant recent results and a current medication list. Mention any visual, hearing or movement needs that could affect testing.
Preparation is about making the information useful and the morning comfortable. If you become unwell or something changes before attending, let the team know so they can advise you.
What happens during the morning in Milton Keynes?
The published Performance and Elite schedule runs from 08:00 to approximately 11:55. Foundation takes around three hours because it does not include the VO₂ assessment or full strength suite.1
| Part of the morning | What it helps you understand |
|---|---|
| Welcome and preparation | The plan for the morning and any individual considerations. |
| Resting metabolism and blood sampling | Selected aspects of metabolic and medical health. |
| Body-composition assessment | Information about body shape and estimated composition. |
| Breakfast and cognitive testing | Performance on selected thinking tasks. |
| Function and strength assessment | Capabilities relevant to movement and daily life. |
| Submaximal fitness assessment in Performance and Elite | An estimate of aerobic capacity. |
| Consultant discussion | What stands out in the available findings and what happens next. |
There is time in the process to understand what is being assessed. You can ask how a measurement relates to your goals rather than feel you are simply moving between stations.
The same-day discussion is not the complete blood-result review. The published service states blood results in three days and a full written report within seven days.1
What can the blood tests contribute?
Blood biomarkers help explore medical risks and selected aspects of metabolic health. Their value comes from interpretation alongside your history and the other assessment findings.
As part of HealthSpan, Hanbury measures fasting insulin and fasting glucose together to calculate HOMA-IR. This uses a model to estimate insulin resistance. The methodological literature explains the importance of reliable inputs and careful interpretation.4
HOMA-IR is one part of the metabolic picture. It is not a standalone diabetes diagnosis or a universal verdict on your health.
The discussion should identify which findings matter for you and what action, if any, is appropriate. That may involve medical follow-up, practical changes or a plan to review a result.
What do body composition and resting metabolism add?
The published programme uses STYKU 3D body scanning and UVIDA resting-metabolic-rate assessment.1
The scan uses body-shape information to produce estimates. It adds a perspective beyond weight, while remaining different from directly imaging internal tissues or testing muscle strength.
Resting metabolism concerns energy use at rest. It is not the same as the total energy you use throughout an active day.
These measurements become useful when connected with your goals. If you are changing weight, for example, the wider discussion can include strength and function so that success is not judged only by the scales.
What does the physical assessment involve?
Foundation includes core measures such as grip, gait, timed up-and-go, sit-to-stand and balance. Performance and Elite add the full published VALD strength and movement suite and the submaximal fitness assessment.1
These tasks explore what your body can do. The findings can be discussed in relation to carrying, climbing, walking or other activities you want to maintain.
Performance and Elite use a UVIDA metabolic mask to analyse your breathing during exercise. This helps estimate your VO₂ max without taking you to maximum effort and informs a plan for the activities you want to enjoy.
If pain or a previous injury affects a task, that belongs in the interpretation. The aim is to understand your starting point and identify suitable support, rather than judge you against an unexplained number.
What does cognitive testing tell you?
CNS Vital Signs uses computerised tasks to sample selected abilities, including attention and shifting attention. These contribute information about current functioning and executive skills.2
You may want to understand an afternoon drop in focus or why demanding tasks feel harder. The consultant considers your performance alongside your history, relevant blood findings and discussion of sleep, stress and daily routines.
Your description of what happens outside the assessment matters. The aim is to identify useful next steps for functioning well at work and at home. Testing contributes information; it is not a standalone diagnosis.
How is a biological-age result used?
The published packages include a biological-age output. It is a model-generated estimate, not a definitive statement that your whole body is a particular age.
Ageing biomarkers can describe different underlying patterns, and their meaning depends on the model used.3 A lower repeat number does not prove that ageing has been reversed or years added to your life.
The practical emphasis remains on understandable health findings and usable capability. You can ask what the estimate adds and whether it changes the plan.
Your goals should stay central: being stronger, feeling more comfortable during activity or addressing a medical risk. Those outcomes do not need an age label to matter.
What do the packages cost?
The published standard prices below were checked on 6 September 2026. The live HealthSpan page contains the full package terms.1
| Package | Standard price | Main assessment and support distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | £995 | Core four-domain assessment, consultant interview and written report; optional £295 retest. |
| Performance | £2,195 | Adds the submaximal VO₂ max estimate, complete strength and movement suite, and a six-month retest. |
| Elite | £3,850 | Adds bespoke strength and conditioning, onboarding, quarterly check-ins, and six- and twelve-month retests and consultant reviews. |
There are also differences in recovery-credit inclusions. Discuss the full package with the team so you understand what is included and what you are likely to use.
Choosing a package is a conversation about your questions and the support you want. Contact us lets the team help you make that decision before an appointment is booked.
What should you expect from your report?
The report brings the information together and identifies priorities. It should explain what the findings mean, what deserves medical attention and what you can begin working on.
Your original goals should remain visible. If you came because you want to enjoy walking holidays, the plan should connect relevant findings with that ambition.
Some findings may require care elsewhere. Hanbury's published pathway includes communication with your GP or recommendation of an appropriate specialist.1
You should also understand the support included in your chosen package and how any review will work. Knowing what happens next helps turn an assessment into something you can use.
How will you review progress?
A review is a chance to consider both measurements and daily life. Are you managing activities more comfortably? Is the routine workable? Do any medical findings need further attention?
Repeat tests are most useful when their purpose is clear and the methods are comparable. The timing and scope depend on your package and clinical needs.
Progress may also reveal where the plan needs adjusting. That is part of developing a routine that fits your health and circumstances.
The focus remains on helping you stay capable and involved, rather than simply producing a different set of numbers.
Why Hanbury Health is different
The consultant remains involved from your interview through interpretation and the written plan. That continuity helps keep your personal questions connected to the assessment findings.
Hanbury's experts in movement, rehabilitation and performance provide appropriate routes to practical support. HealthSpan's purpose is to help you understand where you stand and act on the things that support the life you want to lead.
