Strength adds life to your years and cardio adds years to your life: why you need both

Strength and cardio belong together because daily life asks you both to produce force and to sustain effort. A balanced routine helps you work on both, with the aim of staying capable and enjoying life as you get older.

"Strength adds life to your years and cardio adds years to your life" captures something useful: strength helps you do things, while aerobic fitness has a strong connection with long-term health. Their benefits also overlap. Cardio supports everyday quality of life, and strengthening activity is linked with better long-term health too.

Why is the saying helpful, and where does it oversimplify?

It is memorable because it connects training with something more meaningful than appearance. You are building abilities that can support a full life.

The science does not divide neatly into strength for quality and cardio for length. A systematic review of cohort studies found that strengthening activity was associated with lower all-cause mortality, including after accounting for aerobic activity. Combining both was associated with lower mortality than doing neither.1

A separate large overview found consistent associations between higher cardiorespiratory fitness and better health outcomes.4 These findings are observational and cannot promise how many years any person will gain.

The phrase works best as a reminder to make room for both. Each has something useful to contribute to how you live now and the capabilities you want later.

What does strength give you in everyday life?

Think about lifting a suitcase, standing from a low chair or carrying shopping home. Each asks your muscles to produce force.

When a task approaches your current limit, it can feel demanding even if it lasts only a few seconds. Developing appropriate strength gives you more capacity to work with.

Your goal might be enjoying gardening without avoiding the heavier jobs, or getting down to the floor with your grandchildren and rising comfortably afterwards.

That is a useful purpose for training. You do not have to want a particular physique or a large barbell total. You can train for the ordinary activities that make your life feel like your own.

What does cardio give you beyond long-term health?

Aerobic fitness helps you sustain activity. It matters during a walk with friends, a day exploring a city or an active afternoon with family.

If you have enough capacity for the activity, you can spend more attention enjoying it. The goal may be to move comfortably for longer and still feel ready for the rest of the day.

Walking, cycling and swimming can all provide aerobic activity, depending on the effort and your starting point. Enjoyment and practicality help determine what belongs in your routine.

This is why cardio is also about adding life to your years. Its everyday relevance is not limited to what a research study says about future mortality.

Why not just do the activity you enjoy most?

Enjoyment is a good foundation. The aim is to build on it while checking whether your routine leaves an important gap.

A regular walker may have little progressive strengthening in the week. Someone who enjoys weights may rarely spend time on sustained aerobic activity.

The difference becomes clear when life asks for both. You need strength to lift a bag and fitness to keep moving through a long travel day. One ability does not automatically cover the other.

For adults aged 19 to 64, NHS guidance recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly, with strengthening of the major muscle groups on at least two days.3

Will cardio interfere with strength gains?

It does not inevitably do so. A systematic review of 43 training studies found no significant overall reduction in maximal-strength or muscle-size gains when aerobic work was added to the same strength programme. Explosive-strength gains could be reduced, particularly when both were trained in the same session.2

The studies involved supervised training in healthy adults and varied in quality. They do not mean that every workload is equally suitable.

For most people planning around healthy ageing, the useful question is whether the combination allows you to train well and recover. If one demanding session repeatedly makes the next difficult, the programme may need adjusting.

You can include both without treating your week like a professional athlete's schedule. More specific performance goals may call for more detailed programming.

What could a balanced week look like?

The following example shows one way of arranging general activity guidance for someone already able to tolerate it. It is an illustration, not an individual exercise prescription.

The aerobic activity totals 150 minutes, alongside two strength sessions. You can distribute the time differently around your commitments.3

If this is much more than you currently do, begin with less. A manageable starting routine gives you something to develop, and individual advice can help when illness, symptoms or injury affect participation.

How should you choose the strength exercises?

Choose suitable movements that address the major muscle groups and relate to your goals. Depending on your ability, these might include a chair-rise variation, a pulling movement, a pushing exercise and other controlled resistance work.

Body weight, bands, machines and free weights are all possible tools. The useful choice is one you can perform confidently and adjust as your ability develops.

An expert can help if you are unsure where to begin or if pain affects movement. Learning a small number of suitable exercises well can make the routine less intimidating.

Progress should be intentional. As a task becomes manageable, the challenge may be adjusted rather than simply repeating the same comfortable workload indefinitely.

How hard should the cardio feel?

The effort should fit your current health and fitness. General NHS guidance includes moderate as well as vigorous activity, so every session does not need to be demanding.3

Start with an activity and duration you can repeat. A familiar walk can provide a useful foundation, with changes introduced as your capacity allows.

If you have symptoms such as unexplained breathlessness, chest discomfort or faintness, seek medical attention rather than treating them as a training target.

The aim is to build usable capacity while leaving room for the rest of your life. A routine that repeatedly leaves you exhausted deserves review.

Should you do cardio before or after strength?

There is no single order that suits everyone. Your priority and the demands of each session matter.

A comfortable warm-up is different from a hard endurance session. If you want to perform a challenging strength session well, consider whether the preceding activity leaves you too tired to do it as intended.

The concurrent-training review suggests that scheduling can matter particularly when explosive strength is a priority.2 You can separate demanding sessions or adjust their intensity when necessary.

How can you make the routine last?

Start with your real commitments. Which days are predictable? Which activities do you enjoy? What has made previous plans difficult?

You might place strength sessions on two reliable days and use walking for some of the aerobic activity. Or you might prefer cycling or swimming and build the week around those.

Keep the plan simple enough to restart after a disrupted week. Missing a session does not mean the whole routine has failed.

Review the activities you wanted to improve. Are stairs easier? Can you carry things more comfortably? Do you enjoy a longer walk with enough energy for the afternoon?

If progress is limited, discuss the routine before simply adding more. The plan may need a different challenge, more manageable scheduling or attention to a symptom.

The purpose is capability you can use. Improvements in the gym are valuable when they support the life outside it.

Is strength or cardio better for healthy ageing?
